age based team structure

405 United Basketball is committed to building a program centered on long-term player development, and as such, our teams are built primarily based upon age rather than simply by grade. This is an intentional approach. It’s rooted in what we believe gives our players the best opportunity to grow, compete, and thrive in a basketball setting.

405 United Approach:

Better Development Enviornments

Grouping players by age places them alongside others in similar physical, emotional, and cognitive stages. This allows us to:

  •  Teach more effectively within each group

  •  Challenge players at the right level

  •  Build skills in a more appropriate progression

Increased Competiton

Age-based groupings naturally raise the level of competition:

  •  Players are more evenly matched physically and athletically

  •  Practices become more competitive and game-like

  •  Games are more balanced, which leads to better development and confidence

What This Means for Your Player:

At 405 United, team placement is built around one priority:
placing each player in the best environment for long-term development, confidence, and success.

While grade level is considered, age (based on birthdate) is the primary factor—especially at younger levels. This aligns with most youth sports and ensures fair, competitive, and developmentally appropriate play.

How Age Groups Work:

  • A player’s age is based on how old they are on August 31

  • Their age group stays the same for the entire school year

  • Age groups reset each year on August 31

Age Divisions:

  • 10U (4th Grade): Age 10 or younger

  • 11U (5th Grade): Age 11 or younger

  • 12U (6th Grade): Age 12 or younger

  • 13U (7th Grade): Age 13 or younger

  • 14U (8th Grade): Age 14 or younger

  • 15U (9th Grade): Age 15 or younger

Our focus remains the same:
helping every player grow, improve, and enjoy the game.

We believe strongly this approach provides a better experience for our players—both in their development and in the level of competition they face every day. It's a player-first mindset that aligns with what’s best for long-term growth.

Our City. Our Standard.

Alignment with bigger basketball landscape

Most competitive leagues and tournaments—especially at the higher levels—are structured by age. Making this shift:

  •  Prepares our players for how the game is organized beyond our program

  •  Reduces confusion and transitions later on

  •  Keeps our athletes aligned with national standards

More intentional long-term growth

This change helps us stay focused on what matters most: developing players over time, not just organizing teams for a season.

Team placement isn’t about moving “up” or “down”—it’s about the right fit for each athlete.

Players may compete at their age level, play up for challenge, or be placed where they can build confidence and develop most effectively.

Every decision is intentional and focused on long-term growth.
