The standard of development

How players improve — and why it doesn’t always look the way you expect.

Scroll down to learn what we value, what we teach, and how we build players over time at 405 United.

The 405 United Approach:

development is the foundation of everything we do.

When it comes to a player’s development, it’s important to understand two key truths:

#1 - What Development Is Not.
Development is not defined by things like

  • Playing time

  • Points scored

  • Wins & losses,

  • How quickly a player “moves up”

Those things can happen along the way - but they should never be the end goal.

#2 - What Development Actually Is.
Development is the consistent, intentional improvement of a player over time. It is about building players who can:

  • Think the game of basketball

  • Make good decisions under pressure

  • Execute with confidence

  • Continue improving outside of our program

why development doesn’t always look the way you would expect:

Real development often looks different than what people are used to seeing.

Sometimes it looks like:

  • A player earning their role instead of being given one

  • Learning through mistakes instead of being protected from them

  • Being challenged instead of always being comfortable

  • Prioritizing growth over short-term success

Progress isn’t always obvious in the moment, but over time, it becomes undeniable.

our approach: Long-term > short term

At 405 United, we follow a Long-Term Athlete Development (LTAD) model.

That means:

  • We develop players based on their stage—not just their age or team

  • We prioritize skill, decision-making, and confidence over quick results

  • We focus on where a player is going—not just where they are today

We are not here to maximize a season. We are here to maximize a player.

what development looks like in our program

Game-Transferable Skill Work
Training that shows up in real competition—not just workouts

Decision-Making Training
Teaching players how to read and react, not just memorize

Daily Competitive Environment
Practices designed to challenge and stretch players

Individualized Growth
Developing each player based on what they need most

Accountability & Standards
Effort, attitude, and response are part of development

Confidence Built Through Competence

Growth requires challenge. And challenge is part of the process.

what development is not

To be clear, development does not mean:

  • Always playing a preferred role or position

  • Shortcuts to exposure or recognition

  • Equal/guaranteed playing time

  • Avoiding adversity

our commitment

  • Being honest about where each player is

  • Providing a clear path for improvement

  • Holding players to a high standard

  • Supporting them through the process

At 405 United, we are committed to:

Because real development takes
time — and it requires trust.

our standard

At 405 United, we don’t just develop players.

We develop disciplined, confident, and resilient competitors.

Our City. Our Standard.
